ChimeraX molecular visualization VR software, native Mac version, nightly build. I recently added an external SSD (actually an internal drive, EVO 850 with 500 GB, with enclosure - didn't have the guts to install internally yet) and this. Now that we are starting to see some Mac drivers for some nVidia GPUs, has anyone successfully used an eGPU on a 2012 Mini I have a quad i7 Mini (2.6 GHz) which came with two 1 TB HDDs.Is it worth spending the extra money to have a 2019 vs 2017 iMac? I hear the architecture of the 2019 is significantly improved, but is that significant for running WoT? Is the Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB and important upgrade, or are the 570 of 575 just as good?Get desktop-class graphics performance on your MacBook Pro with the Blackmagic eGPU. I'd like to play in HD with graphics setting near max, so I'll likely partition for Windows and run it natively in that OS. I don't need a lot for my computing needs with this desktop, but I'll choose one that gives me good performance playing WoT. My old Mac Pro no longer runs WoT, so I'm thinking of buying a new 27" iMac.That decision is already made.Depends on your budget - I would not recommend a 2012 13-inch MacBook Pro and would get either the 2017 or 2019 27-inch iMac 5K Retina.Do not get a Fusion drive chose either the 512GB SSD or the 1TB SSD. I'd appreciate your, input.Oh, and please folks, don't try to talk me out of a Mac for a PC. With its simple setup allowing us to quickly install our own Radeon RX 570 graphics card and give our Mac mini an impressive and affordable upgrade.Black_colt, I notice you have considered many of the mac options and you seem very knowledgeable on this subject. I would highly recommend you take a look at the.Alternatively, I could upgrade by 13" MacBook Pro (late 2012) with another laptop, but I'm thinking that 27" monitor is pretty sweet.Since I am considering the Sonnet Breakaway with the 580 which is an Apple supported external GPU configuration, for comparison I looked at this mac-mini-late-2012-sonnet-breakaway-box-350-with-rx-580-8gb, (699) which he benchmarked (with a 2.3Ghz/slower processor but I don't think the difference is significant) at:Best external graphics cards (eGPUs) for Mac. Enjoy supersmooth gaming, accelerate graphics-intensive pro app workflows, and enable VR experiences or content creation.Hi John, Im pretty certain the 2012 Mac Mini only has Thunderbolt 1, and youll need Thunderbolt 2 for an eGPU.
External Gpu Mini 2012 Code On MacOSSo the fault is squarely on Wargaming that macOS users must turn to MS Windows to participate on the Common Test server and run replays. However CodeWeavers, who produced the WGGCMW for Wargaming , has been hard at work on a 64-bit version of Wine that will allow 32-bit code on macOS which may allow the running of replays and the Common Test server. The only reason I run MS Windows is so I can play on the Common Test server and run my replays so giving up 256GB just to do this is kind of a waste. The WG Game Center Mac Wrapper will not allow the Common Test server to be installed nor can you run replays due to Wargaming. I run MS Windows and macOS Catalina natively on my iMac with 512GB with a 256GB partition for macOS and 256GB partition for MS Windows. Ignore it if you want haha.Excellent point about external GPUs. It could be a way of breathing new life into an old computer (mine is 6 years old and can still run anything I've tried at max or very high settings with that GPU plugged in).Personally I would recommend getting a mid range NEW machine since they have typically the highest bang for your buck, and save the eGPU for 6 years down the road when its starting to feel tired.Potentially a pointless post I know. Modern macs with thunderbolt 3 support external GPU's out of the box (I don't know if that includes bootcamp, a simple google search would answer that). I'm not necessarily recommending an old computer with an external GPU, I'm just giving you an other data point for your consideration. I can run WoT on ultra settings and the computer barely gets warm. No 32-bit code can be installed or executed on macOS Catalina.Wargaming will probably, at least not in the near future, not remove 32-bit code from World of Tanks which will continue to cause problems for macOS users so that they can run the game on the most machines as possible.I have a 2013 macbook pro, with an external GPU (GTX 1060) that I use when in windows (windows partition is only for gaming). Hp digitalpersona personalThis feature improves usability tremendously. Apple made changes to its firmware to allow Boot Screen Support through the eGPU-connected monitor. It only has ThunderBolt 2 connections and as I was also thinking about getting a 2019 CTO 27-inch iMac I excluded eGPUs.What version of macOS are you running as IIRC there is no native support for an NVIDIA GPU when running macOS Catalina? You may want to consider a 2018 Mac Mini, eGPU, and external monitor combination.According to - STATE OF EGPU FOR MACS – CATALINA 10.15 UPDATE on the eGPU.io website - " The 2018 Mac mini received preferential treatment in Catalina 10.15. I can't think the GPU on a mac laptop is ever going to make for a good gaming experience however.I've been using my sons iMac lately. I wouldn't upgrade it per se, but get a new MacBook Pro. I suppose an external SSD is an option. My comment about my old MacBook Pro (that I'm typing on right now), was that its due for replacement as my daily work machine. I guess I waited a little too long. It’s reasonable to expect eGPU Boot Screen Support as a standard feature on Thunderbolt 3 and newer headless Macs going forward."I was trying to find something tonight on CyberMonday, but the pickings are slim insofar as finding a 8GB graphics card paired on an iMac with an SSD. Im trying to keep it under $2K. The challenge for day-to-day use so far is the need to connect a monitor directly to the Mac mini (HDMI or USB-C/Thunderbolt 3) in order to use FileVault or Boot Screen to switch between macOS and Windows. Removed Linux since most of the issues with macOS Catalina where resolved. Will need to continue to run MS Windows for mods and being able to run a replay since both rely on 32-bit code. CodeWeavers, who produced the WG Game Center Mac Wrapper for Wargaming, has made some progress on bringing a 32-bit software compatibility layer to macOS Catalina so hopefully we can run mods and replays shortly. As Apple has discontinued the 27-inch Cinema Display I would look for other options depending on your GPU - e.g. Most of my other important applications are all Mac OS based, which is another reason for me so stay with Mac.I'll look into the MacMini idea, but I'm rather enchanted by the 27" apple monitor.World of Tanks runs great on my 2017 15-inch MacBook Pro - 90 FPS on High for MS Windows and macOS - and if your MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt 3 then consider a eGPU and gaming monitor.I just retired my 2013 CTO 27-inch iMac which I had installed an SSD and a 1TB WD Velociraptor and yes it is not a great machine to play WoT on 64-bit MS Windows. Why build a PC when Apple-branded hardware runs MS Windows quite well legally? My 2015 CTO 27-inch iMac was a triple boot machine - Ubuntu, 64-bit MS Windows 10, and macOS Catalina. PC's frustrate me to no end, by comparison and a Mac runs the windows OS quite well in my experience. He picked it up and took it with him last time he was home, so I'm gameless now and jonesing.Yeah, I could build a PC for gaming, and I have a PC at work for my accounting, but I have been a mac person since early on and I find it a far superior piece of technology. WoT played fine on it but the graphics were Meh. I have not explored them as I am happy with my current iMac setup.
